What I have learnt from 29 years in education

Over many years as a teacher, a Head of Department and as Deputy Head in charge of Teaching & Learning, I have focused on helping pupils find ways to focus on and develop excellence in process rather than simply targeting perfection in outcomes

I am a passionate believer that everyone ‘can’, as long as they know how. With the right tools, with control of process and calm application of knowledge and, more crucially, with the right support, anyone can improve if they are prepared to fail forwards and focus on their attitudes, approaches, skills and habits.

My aim with this blog is to set out the thinking behind this approach, to consider other questions focused on teaching and learning in the classroom, and to dispel some of the myths around revision and exam preparation.

I have presented at HMC conferences and run conferences on all aspects of teaching and learning for Dragonfly Training. I have also been a consultant for under-performing departments, contributed to an HMC publication on ‘Best Practice’ and has published study books for A-Level French.

These blog posts are the result of those years of teaching, of the fantastic books, articles and blogs I have read, and of watching and learning from inspiring conferences and colleagues. Some of these resources can be found in the 'recommended' section of this blog.
